With the lower gas prices I could agree, however we still need to explore for oil and protect what is ours.

Oil prices wont stay low so we need to drill just the thought of drilling would send shivers through the middle east.
At the same time we need to Look for cheap viable alternatives so that we can have a choice and conserve things.

I think the best thing we can do for the time being is to drive like gasoline is still $4.00 a gallon.

I think the best thing we can do for the time being is to drive like gasoline is still $4.00 a gallon. I disagree, while the thought is nice, if the oil company start to lose any profits then the price will still go up. Oil company's do have fixed expenses to meet every month, if they can not meet them the price will go up.

While you're correct about overhead, supply and demand still work together. Most of the higher gas prices are the result of our hypermedia, which increases demand but does not increase supply. I'm sure you heard of the false gas shortage in NC several months ago. That was pure media driven.
With a drop in demand, supply will outpace demand. With lower demand, oil companies will produce less and naturally reduce their own costs. Obviously their costs will only drop so much before companies conspire to create a false shortage, and in turn increase demand. But lower demand still beats the oil companies at their own game. I know this will never happen - people drive like $2.00 a gallon is a great deal nowadays. That is why gasoline will once again rise steeply this summer. Instead of lowering our demand to meet the oil companies' lowered supply, we wait to react instead of taking the proactive approach.
