Funny what words people can find offending.
Stranger still when a single word taken out of context can be very offending.
Take the "G" word. At one time this could mean a happy go lucky person. Some one who enjoys life. But over time it has come to mean homosexual.
Many people do find the homosexual lifestyle offending. Not always because of there choice of living, but because some of the "H" people want to say I am normal, you have to accept me and all I do and stand for. Sorry to say each person is different. I do not have to agree or even support what you do. And there is no law which will make me do so.
And yet, some homosexuals find it offending I use this term and not the "G" word. For as I said above the "G" word has a different meaning to me. In fact, many kids still see it as I do, and not the slang some people try to make it so there actions are not as offending. But taking a good word and perverting its meaning still does not change facts.
But if a different word should be needed or used, does not the stander meaning of Queer fit much better? After all it is different.
One word by itself is a puzzle with out knowing the meaning of it.
Case in point. If someone used the "G" word and only the "G" as describing themselves which meaning should I take as there meaning?
There are other words out there which come across the same way to me.
Case in point, I will from time to time visit Craig List. Lately I have seen ads for "glory hole". Which some use with an "S" word. So lately when I see the "S" word, I picture someone on the other side of a bathroom stall.
So I have no use for this P.C. word. And while we should not be trying to offend others, without knowing how some one was raised we really do need to use care with our words.

Words' meanings change over time. That is the downfall of using a 'living' language. If you want the words to be absolute, you're going to need to use a rigid-'dead' language...I'd suggest either Latin or Esperanto.
Marion used to be a man's name....the man's man-John Wayne was born with the name Marion. Name a boy Marion now, you might as well name him Sue.
Privacy is another word that has changed over time. You want to know why it's not mentioned in the Constitution? At that time, if someone wanted 'privacy', they were going to use the privy...over the decades that term changed from being "I'm going to the outhouse" to "I'd like to be alone"...or "me and my stuff are mine-keep out".
Gay is certainly another of those words, yes, it used to mean happy-I guess it still can (sort of the same way Marion could still be a boy's name), but in a living, breathing, language words change.
Queer used to mean strange or odd...then it became the word for gay or homosexual, but that implies something is wrong. As homosexuality has been proven to be a naturally occurring way of life-not a choice (honestly-who would choose to be discriminated against, murdered, and hated?) it has fallen away as a word to use to refer to gays and is actually considered both a slur when spoken by straights and an inside word in the gay community...very much like the 'n-word" (the PC filter here won't let me say n-i-double g-e-r) within the African-American community, those of African descent can use that word, I probably ought not to. Is there a double standard?, You bet, that doesn't make it right or better; groups who have been oppressed tend to do this to take back the slur and deaden it. I don't blame them.
Go ahead and use queer or the n-word (PC filter again) if you must- or if you want or need to (there's no law against it), but understand it means different things to different people.

Living language ... strange some call it that. I would expect that to mean a creation of new words not changing the meaning of current words. Still, you said a lot to just say what I already know. Which is what a word means changes between groups, people and even friends. Still, some things get fishy at times when an older word is seen and yet a "different" meaning is given when asked. Of course there are double meanings for many words. But it does bear looking out for. Which is something we all need to keep in mind or else we might offend someone. And no toe stepping here. I know many people where I need to make allowances for them. As for homosexuals, I see it as one of many reasons why Democrats think they can change nature. After all, yes nature made them that way. I see it as a means to limit the growth of people living on this planet. So, as you clearly pointed out, something is wrong. Which could be why the "Q" which fits so well and is not used as much. Pity for the dying species you know. Words' meanings change over time. That is the downfall of using a 'living' language. I searched Craigslist for that specific term, (in the SF Bay Area) and got two responses, one was a Bicycle, the model name was 'Glory something' and there was a hole in the seat, that got caught by the search function, the other was a huge list of stuff that happened to contain those two words within various items. Not judging, just wondering.

But if you had really looked at the post I made I believe you would have seen the meaning from the darker side of life. And why the word you used was seen as offending to some. After all, you made no statement with the word, leaving the meaning of the word to be seen as we may see it. A fisherman might have thought fish. Me, I just though you were talking about yourself. But when I asked what you meant by the word, and you replied favorite fish. I asked you to make that clear so others would know what you were thinking and just not trying to be insulting. which you did not do but went on the attack. Shame on you. Your current profile remark brought this out into the open. I had to remove a previous message because it may offend someone. One word is not a message and my only way to let others (and you) know that was a post about single words. Remember Next person that calls anyone a

After all, your "S" word could have been taken as a insult to every member of this board. Simply because you did not clearly explain yourself. Then at other times I need to remind people that when you post, you should be adding to the debate and not be trying to give a thinly veil insult. Or be distracting to others.

I'm so sorry that you see life from such a dark perspective. To leap to the worst possible conclusion at every utterance must make life a miserable experience. You have said you don't trust anyone, you've just jumped to the worst possible meaning of a word, shoot, you don't think a single word can convey a message, what do you take from some random person saying "hi' to you? I make a point of greeting random people, I don't know who they are, what they want, I don't care, I'm not assigning any meaning to what they are doing, I'm just spreading a tiny speck of sunshine. All I see of you is looking at/for the darkness or negativity in things. I've done that, it's a waste of time. you get caught up in all the darkness, and it drags you down. Get out, soak up the sunshine, enjoy the light. Life's too short. People will say stuff like: "how are you?", my response: "I'm great, but I'll get better" "have a nice day", my response, "I'm trying, I hope you'll have a great rest of your day too!" this kind of stuff surprises people, their smiles keep me going.

In the real world I see some happiness, light and goodwill. Hum ... since I try to avoid most people I tend to only see people at work, where I say morning or afternoon as the case may be. At other times (mostly when it is a meaningless greeting) I say death warm over. Some people get it, others do not. For those who do not I sometimes say better then life stone cold. If you want to know how an EMT person sees it, ask them. It is a good thing. It is like coming back from the brink of death. But some people bring out the doom and gloom in me. And with them I tend to see the worst. Going by there past actions I do not leap to the worst possible conclusion, but think about what I know about them and what could they mean when something is said. Which is not easy to do here, since I miss the eye contact and body actions which tell so much about a person when talking to them. Anyway, some of us still work for a living and I do have an early start today.
