WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is calling on Congress to pass a transportation bill to ensure funding for roads and construction jobs, arguing that failure to do so would spell economic disaster.
Republicans say they support passing the bill, but Obama says time is running out and "political posturing" may stand in the way.
"There's no reason to put more jobs at risk in an industry that has been one of the hardest-hit in this recession," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "There's no reason to cut off funding for transportation projects at a time when so many of our roads are congested, so many of our bridges are in need of repair and so many businesses are feeling the cost of delays.
"This isn't a Democratic or a Republican issue — it's an American issue," the president said.
I am all for having good roads and highways ... however I have come across so much road work (repaving mostly) on already good roads and seen so many bad roads out there with no help at all. That I have to question if the Federal Government has a clue about where the road funding is being spend at. Then again I believe roads should be a state issue and not the Federal Governments.
But I have to agree with Obama about "This isn't a Democratic or a Republican issue — it's an American issue," the president said.. It is an American issue, one we really need to look at. Just how is this program helping the average American? What good are good roads if you have nowhere to go?
Go back to the drawing board Obama and try and figure out where your plan has gone wrong. Just why has your road projects only put a few people to work. And those few only short time work at that.
