I was thinking this might be a good idea to discuss books that are "banned". Bring up a book and let's talk about it.
What a GREAT idea for a thread!
One book that often gets banned is Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, although Tom Sawyer seems to be "OK".
Another book that I love that often gets banned in K-12 schools is The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. By the way, the book is very little like the movie.

Where has it been banned? I read that one in elementary school (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth...).
According to www-personal.umd.umich.edu The Forbidden Library: this novel has been challenged quite a lot due to its racial themes. challenged - and temporarily banned - in Eden Valley, Minn. (1977); challenged at the Warren, Ind. Township schools (1981), because the book "represents institutionalized racism under the guise of 'good literature'." After unsuccessfully banning the novel, three black parents resigned form the township human relations advisory council. Banned from Lindale, Tex. advanced placement English reading list (1996) because the book "conflicted with the values of the community."

Also in the MSN article one comment made (and recalling my memory) that her daughter read the book on her own in 6th grade. In high school she was required to read it again, but they only read sections because the teacher did not like the racism expressed in the book.

Thank you. I thought it might be good to talk a little about "controversal" books. I thought it would be nice to find out what others had read and recommend reading and also to have a bit of discussion.
Usually those books that get banned express a thought that is not main stream and gets one to think outside their normal parameters. Where better place than the political forum?

I have not been able to find a really good comprehensive list of banned books. I have found several different ones and when I have the time I will compare/contrast.
There are a lot of books I read and I find it interesting to see what falls into my hands. I'm always willing to read a good book.
To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favorite books. The movie is one of the best, and most accurate screen adaptations ever done.

“When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it”~~ Frederic Bastiat
I think that people dont give kids enough credit in their ability to understand the difference between fantasy and reality. I loved books when I was a kid and knew the difference. If there is any doubt, thats where the parents come in.
Our local book store has a display ever year where they have specials on "banned books" Its interesting and sad to see all the books that at one time were on hit lists.
with various excuses reasons as to why some people think this book should be banned. It goes into a lot more detail than I could put here.
I wish these people would blow out their matches and put away their gas and let everyone make up their own minds instead of being the self appointed morality police.
