I've been with Wachovia for 15+ years - ever since they swallowed whomever I was with before then.
Now, Wells Fargo is taking over and according to them:
WTF ?!?!?!?! Wells Fargo is giving themselves FIVE days of float when I pay my bills online?
That is a firable offense - so long Wells.

My little local bank's bill pay is awesome, one to two days depending on time of day I do the payment...the only time they take longer is with a phone company I no longer use...they didn't accept electronic payments so my bank would write a check on my behalf and mail it at no extra charge. (Oh bill pay is a free service at my bank) And all atm fees from other banks are credited back to my account every month. And finally, my bank uses sound business practices, it didn't do any of that risky mortgage repackage & sell stuff and therefore needed no help from the gov't.- despite having a share of its business in low income, economically depressed areas.

Anyone who cares about their finances would do well to fire Wells Fargo.

Kind-of-funny side note, Wells Fargo is who has my home mortgage, and while I use there fee free site to make my payment (and it does give credit on the day of payment before 2:00PM) it is still 3 to 5 days before it gets filed with my bank.

I'm looking for a good, local bank. When the crisis happened a couple of years ago, one interview I saw was with the president or manager of a local bank. He said that local banks were very sound. I would really like to get away from a bigger bank. I'm a basic, no-frills kind of person. I don't need much from my bank and I would rather not pay for services I don't need or use.

Look for a credit union. Lower loan rates, free checking, interest on checking and savings.

Many local credit unions have relaxed their rules for who can join. Several advertise on TV/radio here around DC. I have had a CU account for over 30 years. My recent spat with Wells Fargo has convinced me to take a multi-prong apporach. 1. Fire Wells for my day-to-day banking. I will likely keep an account there for the next 3-6 months. 2. I have started up at ING Direct (the "Orange" people). I earned 2 cents of interest on $ 500 in my first 10 calendar days with them. 3. Memorize my ING debit card pin 4. I am going to link my CU to ING just as soon as I can find my CU checks. 5. Wells has been fine with my mortgage since they became the servicer some 18 months ago when I refinanced, so I don't think I need the hassel of trying to switch. Especially since any mortgage lender can buy or sell my mortgage whenever they please.

Oh, FYI: I have yet to see a credit union with FDIC backing. FDIC is for banks, CUs have their own agency, I believe.

I'm convinced, along with Max, that Credit Unions are the way to go. They don't get bought out and turn into McBanks. They are more customer-oriented because they really, really need you; and they seem to have competitive rates and free checking! I have belonged to a federal CU at work for almost 30 years, and they have yet to treat me like an insignificant piece of lint because I don't have 6 figures on deposit! In the meantime, my other bank down the street from home has been bought out and changed names at least three times in the past 5-6 years! With each change in ownership, we have to go through the learning curve once again, then they start whittling away at the free services. Bull cookies, I say!

Do credit unions allow all and sundry to deposit? I don't belong to any organizations that have a credit union.

Do credit unions allow all and sundry to deposit? I don't belong to any organizations that have a credit union. try this... www.ttcu.org/ttcu_info/how_do_i_qualify.aspxI don't know anything about this organization, but they're big and may take you...give it a try. otherwise, here's a list of CUs around Nashville, maybe one can help you, the links don't all work, but you could search by name and check their requirements. creditunionaccess.com/TN-Nashville-credit-unions.htmotherwise go to the main part of creditunionaccess.com and see what they can do for you...I'm sure there's something there for you...good luck!
