A Wal Mart worker trampled to death in New York; an 8 month pregnant woman trampled and injured. Two men shot each other to death at a Toys-R-Us. Locally, a woman punches a man square in the face over a Hannah Montana doll. I'm sure there are many, many more similar stories to tell.
Knowing human nature, why would store management even think about setting themselves up for this kind of thing, even at the risk of getting in a lawsuit?
Because love of the dollar overrides peoples' sense of responsibility, and hampers their reasoning. Greed and selfishness replace respect and courtesy.
Next year, the story will be the same. Sad.

One store they had people started camping out on wensday night so they could be the first in the store I am thinking to myself dont these people have anything better to do on Thanksgiving day than wait for a store to open?

I prefer Cyber Monday to Black Friday any day. At least until next year when I'll finally be returning to the US.

One year my wife wanted me to stand in line overnight and wait for a X-Box 360 for one of the boys for Christmas. I told her, "No way!" And I "forbad" her (No, that doesn't work very often ... Maybe twice over a 32-year relationship ... 22 of them married) to go either. She has a bad back. We ended getting one for that Christmas anyway. It just took a little luck and creativity.

I remember back in I think 1998, a certain store in my area got a shipment of 16 Furbies. They advertised that they will have 16 Furbies for sale on Black Friday when the store opens at 10 am. I happened to be heading out on a trip that day. I left home pretty early and passed by that store around 6 am. There was a crowd of roughly 75 people there for those 16 Furbies.

I sarcastically suggested on a local forum here that the retailers hand out guns to the first 200 Black Friday shoppers, and that those who got the guns be exempt from homicide charges for Black Friday.
One, every Black Friday shopper hates every other Black Friday shopper, and all of them would like to kill anyone who threatens to get the "last item" of whatever it is they went in there for.
Two, these heartless Black Friday shoppers can then brag to little Johnny about how he had to kill some people to get that X-Box or whatever it is that little Johnny got.
(For all we know, little Johnny would have gotten the most violent games to go along with his X-Box.)
Three, (and I'm still being sarcastic here), is that society could do without Black Friday shoppers, and if some of them are removed then the world could become more civilized.
No, I am not being serious here, but I couldn't help but think of that idea to hand out guns when I learned of the Wal*Mart worker who was trampled to death, and those two in Palm Springs who did fight to the death over some bargain.

I think a lot of it depends on how stores handle this. I know at our Best Buy they have created vouchers, and about an hour before the store opens the employees will go out with the number of vouchers they have for that "hot item" or limited stock. They start at the front of the line and work their way back until they are all handed out. This prevents the rushing and fighting for items.
I personally enjoy going out and looking for good deals, but I also don't need something enough to freeze. I figure if I'm meant to have it then there will be one for me.

One store they had people started camping out on wensday night so they could be the first in the store I am thinking to myself dont these people have anything better to do on Thanksgiving day than wait for a store to open? Easy way to eliminate these ridiculous (and lethal) Black Friday shenanighans. Every store that expects one of these "events" has a lottery in the weeks and months leading up to the event. You print as many tickets numbered 1 to x, x being the number of people allowed in the structure at any one time by the Fire Marshal and every adult in that metropolitan area gets one ticket if he or she wants one (for free) by showing his license. Drawing is held the week before Black Friday, results posted on the Internets, and everyone lines up nice and orderly like according to your number 1 hour before the store opens. Say a Best Buy in your town can hold 200 people per the Fire Marshal. As many sets of 200 "lottery tickets" are printed that management might think he needs, 1-200 Series A, 1-200 Series B and so on. When the holder of ticket 1A is all done shopping and leaves the store, then the owner of ticket 1B can enter the store, therefore there is never more than 200 people in the store, and everyone is lined up nice and orderly by number. of course most of the "door buster" deals are available on line and you can purchase them without having to go to the store

I'd rather pay the fee than camp out in freezing weather. Doing it online I can shop from the comfort of my recliner, watch TV also, and have the widget delivered right to my door long before Christmas.

We do not follow popular trends in gift giving. We like toys that promote the use of a child's imagination instead of the ones that dictate limitations on a child's imagination.

ordering online and then picking up at the store is usually free...Walmart, Best Buy, and I think Sears all have this option....and alot of stores, like Toys R Us, have free shipping if you spend the right amount
